‘A bit of Adam Magic’ – Introducing Pat Keith

I have felt a great sense of pride over the last few weeks, when reading the Success Stories that Easy Way students have been sending in.  Thank you to those of you who have had the courage to share your story with me!

As a teacher, there is no greater reward than to hear that my students have taken those tools and techniques and used them to overcome the obstacles, achieve their goals and find a greater passion and joy for the art of photography!

That’s enough about me – it’s time to introduce Pat Keith and share his ‘Success Story’.
Pat Keith

I have really enjoyed Adam’s courses on Lightroom and Photoshop. He has an amazing way of conveying information.  As a technical type, I love his explanations of WHY something works and not just how to do it.

In less than 3 months I was creating images I only ever dreamed of!

For me, photography as a serious hobby began in 1974.  Stationed in northern South Korea and like many other military personnel, I became bored with the day to day. I decided to take up photography and signed up for a course on the base.

My instructor was an award winning Korean photojournalist and was instrumental in my having a good start.  With a Canon AE-1 in hand, along with rolls of Agfa Pro 120 film, I began to shoot.  I learned to spool my film in the developer tank, process in a dark room, dodge and burn, etc.  It was a wonderful, technical world for me.  I left Korea with over 1000 images and their negatives.

Back in the US… the hobby took second place to earning a living.  I had left the military and gone to work for Texas Instruments in the high precision optics shop, specialising in managing the production of infrared lenses for missile systems etc.  More technology was added to my plate and so today, I can spout the difference between BK-7 and SF-4 glass, run a high-vacuum coating machine, and tell you what all the coatings actually do for lenses.  But who cares?  It didn’t enable me to take better pictures and I soon realised that I had fallen into the trap of “technology wins”.  While technology is an enabler, the photographer is the one that turns an image into a picture, a winning picture.

After retiring, I again pursued my hobby with a serious passion.
I sold the old Nikon D80 and picked up a Nikon D7100.  True to my tech upbringing, I retired the D7100 early for a Nikon D810 and D500…along with all the lenses you need for birding, portraits, landscape, weddings, etc.

Then I realised that I still lacked something… that magic sauce with which an ordinary photo becomes a winner.

I knew I needed Photoshop but every time I brought up a YouTube video or the like, my eyes would glaze over, I would get frustrated, and nothing would get done.

Easy Way photography came to the rescue!

I was lured by the string of courses that would, in my mind, free me from the technology snare and free my creativity.

It also seemed to be a way to finally learn Photoshop.

I purchases Composition Fundamentals, Lightroom Workflow – 5 minute magic, Essential Photoshop Workflow Course (beginner), Accelerator Photoshop Workflow Course, and the Turbo Photoshop Workflow Course (Advanced).

I was able to hang in there as Adam demonstrated basic techniques and then built on them.  In no time, I began to really understand how Photoshop worked and more importantly, how it worked in conjunction with Lightroom.

What is so telling about the quality of these courses is that I had tried to learn Photoshop for over five years and in less than three months, was creating images that I had only ever dreamed of.

Today, I am a professional photographer specialising in landscapes, architecture, and fine art prints.  I don’t think I will ever get “there” but the quality of my work has drastically improved.

For some time, I have been trying to capture the desert in late evening in order to convey a mood.

Following are three scenes with a ‘before and after’ image that shows just how far a little Adam Magic will take you.

I finally am producing photos that speak to the mood and atmosphere of the subject and I frequently go back to the classes to touch up my skills a bit and am very happy with the outcomes.
