A ‘Smart’ move brings success – Introducing Christine Rocher

I have felt a great sense of pride over the last few weeks, when reading the Success Stories that Easy Way students have been sending in.  Thank you to those of you who have had the courage to share your story with me!

As a teacher, there is no greater reward than to hear that my students have taken those tools and techniques and used them to overcome the obstacles, achieve their goals and find a greater passion and joy for the art of photography!

That’s enough about me – it’s time to introduce Christine Rocher and share her ‘Success Story’.

Christine Rocher

I can honestly say that the Easy Way courses and Adam Williams have opened a pandora’s box for me in my photography. I was always hesitant, scared even of trying new techniques and had this notion that you need to get it right in camera and any post processing was seen as ‘not proper photography’.

How wrong was I!!!
By going through the Easy Way courses, I have realised that my images are not finished once I have shot them, that this was only the beginning…. step one. My creativity and my vision come to fruition in Lightroom and Photoshop, and using some of the marvellous add-on’s out there, like Nik collection and Topaz.

“I often go back and re-watch the videos again and again, as I learn something new from them every time I watch them, so having lifetime access to them is such a bonus!”

“I always have a preconceived idea of what I want to achieve, so I am prepared with the right gear when I am on the lookout for images. I believe the image still needs to be technically strong (you can hide a lot of things in LR and PS, but I try and get a good solid image to work with).”

“Also timing the right lighting conditions for the look you are after is important. Perhaps it is the long shadows, or the golden glow, or the misty and cold atmosphere. Planning for and checking weather conditions plays a very important role in getting a solid image in camera.”

“So, the Easy Way course has unleashed my creativity and allowed me to express my innermost feelings in my images!”

My biggest achievement, apart from the obvious success at a few competitions, is the feeling of elation I get when viewers of my images get a sense of the emotion portrayed and can feel the message or reason behind the image.

I had decided that 2021 was going to be the year that I studied the science of colour. In particular, the colour tones used by the wonderful Australian artist, Jeffery Smart. I bought his book ‘Master of Stillness’, so I could study his work and get a sense of his thoughts. Well, the title of the book got my attention as a start, the stillness and the silence of creating.

A quote from Jeffrey Smart struck a chord with me. The subject matter is only the hinge that opens the door, the hook on which hangs a coat. My only concern is putting the right shapes in the right colours in the right places. It is always the geometry”.

The shapes, the geometry, and the colour of the mundane urban landscapes that we often take for granted was something that I wanted to focus on. This is where ‘Urban Shell’ was born. The icing on the cake was having a judge from the AIPP Silver lining awards recognise this in their feedback regarding my image.

“The often heralded Australian realist painter, the late Jeffrey Smart, is a common friend of urban landscape photography…his humour of the found macro, where removed from context, sharp design and colour step forward. Amazingly what you have achieved here is both 3D and 2D as the rain head provides distinct depth whilst the ladder only pretends. All down to your intelligent choice of optics to compress and time of day to provide diagonal drop shadows. One cannot ignore your refusal to incorporate anything beyond the blandest of colour temperatures to create an egalitarian palette which supports the greys in their struggle for attention against their bolder neighbours.”

Needless to say, this feedback was definitely the highlight for Christine. Getting in the top 10 as a finalist in the competition was a bonus for sure!
Below is Christine’s finalist image ‘Urban Shell’, which she entered in the AIPP Silver Lining Awards. You can understand why it was up there with the best!
Thank you so much to Christine for sharing her inspirational ‘Success Story’. Take a moment to check out more of Christine’s imagery on her website – rerrorocherphotography.com .  I hope that you enjoyed hearing about one of our fellow Easy Way Students, as much as I did! It is great to hear the thought process and the journey behind the creation of imagery, including artists, who have inspired Easy Way Students. Keep up the stunning work Christine!

Sharing and celebrating success, teaches, inspires, challenges and motivates others to achieve similar goals and we would be excited to share your success story with fellow students at Easy Way Photography.

Perhaps you have succeeded in mastering sky replacements or created your first composite image. Or you have found the courage to enter your first competition.

If you feel that you have succeeded in any way and in doing so, would like to give others a great sense that they are not alone on their photographic journey, we would be excited to share your story.

Please provide a brief summary of your success story, to be considered for an interview to be featured on the Easy Way Photography Blog, Facebook Group, Instagram, Facebook business page and via email to Easy Way Photography subscribers.
